◐ Cosmetics (FCF only; perfumery) — dual-use with phototoxicity as the governing rule

Bergamot essential oil is cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus bergamia, the fragrant citrus of Calabria, Italy, and gives Earl Grey tea and classic eau de cologne their signature note. It is rich in limonene, linalyl acetate, and linalool, with reviewed antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and mood-modulating activity [1, 2]. Its defining hazard is phototoxicity: cold-pressed bergamot contains bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen), which under UV causes severe burns and lasting pigmentation (“berloque dermatitis”); IFRA limits expressed bergamot to 0.4% in leave-on products [3, 4]. ORY® therefore uses bergamot FCF (furanocoumarin-free, steam-rectified) for any leave-on skin, hair, or cosmetic use, and reserves the expressed oil for rinse-off products and soap, where phototoxic risk is minimal. Even FCF bergamot carries the usual citrus cautions — oxidized limonene sensitization and allergen labeling.

What is Bergamot Essential Oil made of?

Bergamot oil is expressed from the peel; FCF grades are vacuum-distilled or treated to remove furanocoumarins. Composition [1, 4]:

    • Limonene (30–45%), linalyl acetate (20–35%), linalool (5–15%), γ-terpinene, β-pinene: Fresh-floral citrus profile; antimicrobial; linalool/limonene oxidize to allergens.
    • Bergapten (0.1–0.4% in expressed oil; <0.001% in FCF): Phototoxic furanocoumarin; sets the 0.4% leave-on IFRA limit for expressed oil [3].
    • Bergamottin and other coumarins: Minor; partly phototoxic.
    • Dermal maximum: Expressed 0.4% leave-on (phototoxicity); FCF ~no phototoxic limit (allergen limits apply) [3, 4].

What skin type is best suited for Bergamot Essential Oil?

Bergamot suits oily and normal skin in FCF form; expressed oil is rinse-off only:

    • Oily: FCF in cleansers, toners (solubilized), and light oils; antimicrobial, balancing.
    • Acne-prone: FCF antimicrobial in blemish products; rinse-off expressed oil in washes.
    • Combination: FCF at 0.5%.
    • Normal: FCF in body oils and washes; uplifting.
    • Mature: Body products; antioxidant limonene (FCF).
    • Dry: FCF in body washes; light leave-on use.
    • Sensitive: FCF only, ≤0.3%; oxidized limonene sensitizes; patch test.

What hair type is best suited for Bergamot Essential Oil?

Bergamot balances oily scalps and brightens haircare fragrance:

    • Oily scalp: Balancing, antimicrobial; 0.5–1% in shampoos (expressed OK) or FCF in leave-ins.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Antimicrobial support in shampoos and scalp oils.
    • Dry or damaged: Aromatic addition to hair oils (lengths and ends).
    • Straight, wavy, curly, coily: Fragrance and scalp-comfort addition at low levels.
    • Color-treated: Low-level use; avoid the first 48 hours after coloring.
    • Sensitive scalp: Lowest end of the range; patch test.
    • Mature or thinning: Scalp-massage blends with rosemary and lavender.

What are the benefits of Bergamot Essential Oil?

Bergamot’s benefits are supported by pharmacological and clinical reviews [1, 2]:

    • Antimicrobial: Limonene and linalool inhibit skin bacteria and fungi [1].
    • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammatory mediators [2].
    • Mood and stress: Bergamot aroma reduced stress markers and anxiety in clinical settings [2].
    • Sebum balance: Traditional for oily skin and scalp.
    • Antioxidant: Flavonoids (in extract) and limonene.
    • Signature fragrance: Classic cologne/Earl Grey note.
    • Soap: Bright note (fades — anchor with lemongrass or litsea).
