Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid and the form used in almost all cosmetic “hyaluronic acid” products: it is more stable, more water-soluble, and smaller than the free acid, so it penetrates and disperses better. Hyaluronan is the skin’s principal water-binding molecule, and its decline with age contributes to dryness and wrinkles [1]. Topically, sodium hyaluronate holds many times its weight in water at the skin surface, and a clinical comparison found that lower-molecular-weight fractions penetrated further and produced greater improvements in wrinkle depth and elasticity over 60 days [2]. Modern sodium hyaluronate is produced by bacterial fermentation (vegan) and has been reviewed as safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel [4]. ORY® uses multi-weight blends to hydrate at several depths in serums, creams, hair treatments, and cosmetics.

What is Sodium Hyaluronate made of?

Sodium hyaluronate is produced by fermentation of Streptococcus zooepidemicus or engineered Bacillus subtilis, then purified and dried; molecular weight is controlled by processing. Points to know [3, 4]:

    • Sodium salt of hyaluronic acid (a glycosaminoglycan of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine): White powder; forms gels in water.
    • High MW (>1,000 kDa): Surface film; reduces water loss; anti-inflammatory.
    • Medium MW (100–1,000 kDa): Hydrates the upper epidermis.
    • Low MW / hydrolyzed (<50 kDa): Penetrates deeper; greater wrinkle-depth improvement [2].
    • Crosspolymer: Cross-linked network for long-lasting hydration.
    • Vegan, fermentation-derived; CIR-reviewed safe [4].

What skin type is best suited for Sodium Hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate suits all seven ORY® skin types, with molecular weight tailored to each:

    • Dry: Sodium hyaluronate draws and holds water in the stratum corneum — the primary beneficiary.
    • Dehydrated / Sensitive: Non-irritating hydration that supports barrier recovery; suitable for reactive skin.
    • Mature: Restores water content lost with age; plumps fine dehydration lines.
    • Normal: Daily hydration maintenance.
    • Combination: Oil-free hydration for all zones.
    • Oily: Water-light serums hydrate without oil; low-MW grades absorb fully.
    • Acne-prone: Non-comedogenic; offsets the dryness of acne actives.

What hair type is best suited for Sodium Hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate hydrates the scalp and binds water to the hair cuticle:

    • Dry or damaged: Sodium hyaluronate binds water to the fiber and scalp, improving softness and pliability.
    • Curly and coily: Humectant moisture supports curl definition; seal with oil or butter.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Replenishes water lost in chemical services; reduces brittleness.
    • Sensitive scalp: Hydrates a tight, flaky scalp without irritation.
    • Straight and wavy: Light hydration and shine at low levels (high levels can feel sticky or attract humidity frizz).
    • Oily scalp, dandruff-prone, mature or thinning: Water-based hydration that does not add oil; supports scalp comfort.

What are the benefits of Sodium Hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate’s benefits are supported by clinical and review literature [1–4]:

    • Intense hydration: Binds water in the stratum corneum; measurable within hours.
    • Wrinkle reduction and elasticity: Low-MW fractions reduced wrinkle depth and improved elasticity in clinical testing [2].
    • Barrier support: High-MW film reduces water loss and calms after acids or retinol.
    • Anti-inflammatory and repair support: Native component of the wound-healing matrix.
    • Plumping: Well-hydrated skin looks smoother immediately.
    • Layer-friendly: Compatible with virtually all actives.
    • Hair and scalp moisture: Hydrates scalp; improves softness and reduces dryness-related breakage.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Sodium hyaluronate is a water-phase humectant for leave-on and low-rinse products; in cold-process soap it rinses away, so ORY® does not use it there.
