Geogard ECT

ORY® product lines:

☑ Skincare

☑ Haircare

◐ Handmade Soap (liquid/cream soap and syndet only if pH ≤6; not needed in cold-process bars)

☑ Cosmetics — three-line functional ingredient; ORY®’s natural-standard preservative

Geogard ECT is a broad-spectrum preservative blend built entirely from ingredients accepted by natural-cosmetics standards — benzyl alcohol (antibacterial), salicylic acid (antimicrobial and antifungal), sorbic acid (antifungal), and glycerin as carrier — and it is ECOCERT- and COSMOS-approved, which makes it ORY®‘s preservative of choice for natural- and clean-positioned water-based products. Its three actives cover bacteria, yeast, and mold together at 0.6–1.0% in emulsions, gels, and surfactant systems that finish at pH 3–6 (ideally ≤5.5), the range most skin and hair products already use. Each component has been reviewed for cosmetic safety: benzyl alcohol by the CIR [1], salicylic acid by the CIR [2], and sorbic acid by the CIR [3]. The trade-off for natural status is a narrower comfort zone: it is pH-dependent, benzyl alcohol is a labeled fragrance allergen at the levels used, and its salicylic acid content must be counted toward product limits. Every water-containing product needs a preservative: unpreserved creams, gels, and shampoos grow bacteria, yeast, and mold within days, and contaminated cosmetics have caused documented skin and eye infections. Anhydrous products (oils, balms, butters, cold-process soap) do not need one.

What is Geogard ECT made of?

Geogard ECT is a clear-to-pale-yellow liquid blend. Composition and roles [1–3]:

    • Benzyl alcohol (majority): Aromatic alcohol; broad antibacterial (Gram-positive and -negative); active across pH 3–6; a listed fragrance allergen above 0.001% leave-on/0.01% rinse-off (must be declared).
    • Salicylic acid: Antimicrobial and antifungal; also a mild exfoliant — counts toward the salicylic-acid limit (EU 0.5% preservative use; 2% U.S. OTC acne); not for children under 3.
    • Sorbic acid: Antifungal (yeast, mold); active as the undissociated acid at pH ≤6 — the reason the blend is pH-dependent.
    • Glycerin: Carrier and humectant.
    • Typical use 0.6–1.0%; effective pH 3–6 (best ≤5.5); add at ≤50 °C or at cool-down.
    • ECOCERT/COSMOS-approved; paraben-, formaldehyde-, and PEG-free; globally accepted.

What skin type is best suited for Geogard ECT?

Geogard ECT is a formulation-level ingredient suitable for all seven ORY® skin types:

    • All skin types: Geogard ECT is a formulation-level preservative system rather than a skin-type active; at its use level it is suitable for every ORY® skin type.
    • Sensitive: Benzyl alcohol is a labeled fragrance allergen and salicylic acid can rarely sting — patch test; ORY® offers phenoxyethanol/ethylhexylglycerin for benzyl-alcohol-sensitive customers.
    • Acne-prone: Prevents microbial growth that can worsen breakouts; non-comedogenic.
    • Dry: Protects water-rich hydrating products.
    • Oily and Combination: Protects gels, toners, and light lotions.
    • Mature: Protects active-rich serums and creams over their shelf life.
    • Normal: Everyday product protection.

What hair type is best suited for Geogard ECT?

Geogard ECT protects acidic ORY® haircare products, which naturally sit at pH 4.5–6:

    • All hair and scalp types: Geogard ECT protects water-based shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, and scalp serums; no direct effect on hair.
    • Sensitive scalp: Low-irritation preservation at use levels; patch test if preservative-sensitive.
    • Curly and coily: Essential in water-rich curl creams and leave-ins that stay on the hair.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Prevents contamination of scalp treatments applied to compromised skin.
    • Oily scalp, dry or damaged, color-treated, mature or thinning, straight, wavy: Neutral; formulation-level protection for all.

What are the benefits of Geogard ECT?

Geogard ECT’s benefits combine natural-standard compliance with full-spectrum protection [1–4]:

    • Full-spectrum preservation: Bacteria (benzyl alcohol, salicylic acid), yeast and mold (sorbic acid, salicylic acid).
    • ECOCERT/COSMOS-approved: Compatible with natural and organic certification.
    • Paraben-, formaldehyde-, PEG-free: Clean-label.
    • Broad formula compatibility: Emulsions, gels, surfactant systems, cationic conditioners.
    • Reviewed components: [1–3].
    • Liquid, easy dosing: One ingredient covers the system.
    • Mild exfoliating bonus: Trace salicylic acid supports acne-prone and scalp products.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Geogard ECT protects water-containing products in three ORY® lines at pH ≤6; cold-process bars need no preservative and alkaline liquid soap is outside its pH range.

References to FDA or Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) findings describe the ingredient, not ORY® products, and do not mean FDA has reviewed or approved any ORY® product.

Results vary by skin and scalp type, formulation, and use. Benzyl alcohol is a known fragrance allergen, and salicylic acid is a salicylate, so people allergic to aspirin or other salicylates may react. Any cosmetic can cause irritation, sometimes from other ingredients. Always patch test, follow label directions, and stop use if irritation occurs.
